The Pilates Roll Down

Understanding Sciatica

Sciatica refers to pain radiating along the path of the sciatic nerve, the longest nerve in the human body. This nerve originates from the L4 to S3 nerve roots, merging to form the sacral plexus, and travels from the lumbar spine through the buttock and down the posterior leg. In clinical contexts, sciatica is a symptom of underlying pathology rather than a diagnosis itself.

A Pilates teacher must be knowledgeable about the condition, its impact on the body, and how specific exercises can either alleviate or aggravate symptoms. The goal is to help the client strengthen muscles, improve posture, and support the spine while avoiding movements that may stress or load to the affected discs.
